1. Harold Garfinkel’s concept of ethnomethodology emphasizes the construction of effective meaning. Using this concept, discuss the problem of meaning as it relates to text messaging and e-mail. How often is the meaning of messages unclear through texts and e-mails? How do acronyms (e.g., LOL or BRB) or emojis help or hurt meaning?
2.Use any of the theories of socialization described in Chapter 4, such as social learning theory or cognitive development theory, to explain your own socialization experiences. Apply your chosen theory to thoroughly discuss your personal and/or professional growth.
3.Describe a total institution of which you have been a part that you do not mind sharing in this class. You can also describe a total institution of which you have knowledge, if you choose not to discuss your own personal experience or do not have a personal experience to share. For your chosen total institution, discuss specific norms, values, and social interactions that are common in this total institution. Also, describe specific examples of resocialization that are common in this total institution.
4.Choose two agents of socialization presented in Chapter 4: family, teachers, peers, religion, work, or mass media. Discuss the various ways that your chosen agents influence us. Consider both the negative and positive aspects of socialization for each of your chosen agents. Provide specific examples of their influence on us. Your discussion can be in the context of historical and/or contemporary times.
