also the frontier and the West, the struggle between good and evil, and religious understanding and misunderstanding.

The first of these is the frontier and the West as symbolic spaces that hold enormous but ambivalent powers of both creation and destruction. They are always spaces that are constantly being mythologized or re-mythologized.The second theme is the struggle between good and evil.In the first generations of Western films, good characters were always dressed in white and malignant characters would be dressed in black. But this representation of good and evil may go far beyond struggles between individuals or between groups (e.g., the cattle ranchers against the settler farmers or between pan-miners against hydraulic miners) so that the seeming struggle reflects a larger struggle involving cosmic forces. What do the films we view tell us about the different ways of creating “the other” in these conflicts? The third theme, and the most important dynamic in this genre, is religious understanding and misunderstanding, which we will see at the heart of many of the conflicts that arise in Western films.

Position paper: Media and Society

Assignment 1: Position Paper One – Media and society

Imagine that you are running for a state office (e.g., governor, senator, or Congressional representative) and you have to prepare a position paper for a debate on controversial issues in the news. (Select one (1) of the topics addressed in the first four weeks of this class.) Remember that you are addressing a significant segment of your state’s population and you want to be elected to public office, so your topic will have to have a broad appeal, such as the importance of family values, the fair treatment of women in the workplace (equal pay for equal work), the treatment of minorities, and the media and one’s self-image.

You will want your position paper to demonstrate critical thinking, sound logic, valid claims, personal passion, and credible support that is cited correctly because the paper will be provided to the news media before the debate and will be scrutinized by the media and reported on regarding these criteria.

Write a two to three (2-3) page (500 to 750 words) paper in which you:

  1. Introduce your position using a thesis statement in the first paragraph, including a quote, question, or statistic from your reliable sources and an overview of the main points you will cover. (It’s important to grab the audience’s interest and inform the audience of what the main and support points are.)
  2. Provide two or three (2-3) major points to support your thesis statement. (Put each major point in a separate paragraph.)
  3. Provide one (1) paragraph in which you identify and answer an expected argument against your view.
  4. Organize arguments and support your claims effectively.
  5. Demonstrate personal passion for your position and critical thinking with persuasive language, sound logic, valid claims, and credible support for the claims.
  6. Use the Strayer University Library at https://research.strayer.edu to locate and provide two to three (2-3) credible and reliable sources (in addition to the textbook) about current events, which have been published in the last five (5) years and are cited correctly in the position paper. (Wikipedia, dictionaries, and encyclopedias are unacceptable and will not count toward your number of credible sources.)

THE 4 TOPICS TO CHOOSE FROM ARE:

Do Media Influence Society?

  • Debate It – Take a position on this statement: American values are shaped by the mass media. Support your views with two or three reasons and/or examples
  • “The Media and Race”Debate It – Take a position on this statement: Representation of race in the media affects our perceptions of individuals. Support your views with one or two reasons and / or examples. (Cite any sources you referenced.)
    “Body Image”
    • Debate It – Take a position on this statement: Media cause individuals to develop negative and unrealistic body images. Support your views with two or three reasons and/or examples. (Cite any sources you referenced.)

Product Placement”

  • Is product placement as popular in new media as it has been in traditional television and film content? Do you think over time audiences become anaesthetized to this type of advertising? Support your views with two or three reasons and/or examples. (Cite any sources you referenced.)

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow Strayer Writing Standards. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Discuss a barrier to evidence-based practice in your clinical area and a strategy to prevent it?

As an oncological specialty nurse, one of the most noticeable barriers we face when implementing evidence-based practice is lack of knowledge. As medicine evolves researched data is updated many of these break throughs in medicine requires systemic changes. Some of the changes are focused on improving protocols or increases one’s knowledge on the different types of chemotherapies and leukemic changes as it relates to our patient population. Nurses are the largest group of healthcare providers globally and therefore have a key role in ensuring the promotion and delivery of quality healthcare and services.

EBP can lead to enhanced quality of patient care, reduced costs, improved patient and family satisfaction, individual and professional development of nurses, enhanced organizational performance and changed outcomes. It’s important as an oncology nurse to keep up with all educational and teaching course related to the changes in chemotherapies and treatment options. Overcoming barriers related to knowledge is one of the key successors for this specialty. Patients who receive care based on scientific evidence have better outcomes, but research continues to report numerous barriers to implementing evidence-based nursing practice in the clinical arena. Overcoming all barriers that affect patient care is key for maintaining quality and managing the organizational needs for achieving optimal health.
